A week or two ago I talked about my troubles with those rascally rodents, squirrels. After my homemade cover failed to keep the squirrels from ransacking my freshly planted carrot and radish seeds, I decided to cover the container with Glad Press n’ Seal. It worked in more ways than I expected.
The Press n’ Seal worked like a sort of greenhouse, incubator thing. It kept the moisture in and kept the squirrels out. It allowed sunlight to reach the soil and get that photosynthesis action kickstarted. There was a small slit between two of the sheets of Press n’ Seal that I worried would give the squirrels a way into my carrots and radishes, but the seedlings were left it alone and the slit allowed air to circulate.
Once the radishes began to sprout, about 5 or 6 days later, I removed the remaining Press n’ Seal, which a few windy days had already partially done, to give them full view of the sun. There has been no evidence of any squirrel activity in my carrot and radish habitat since the seedlings have burst forth into the open air, reaching for the sun and spreading tender leaves upward and outward. This is great!
Just this Monday I noticed that the carrots are starting to spring up, and even though some of them are not where I intended for them to be, I can still arrange them while they are young.
